Winter Storm Causes PennDoT to Reduce Speeds on Interstate Roadways and Restrict Certain Vehicles

Due to the severity of the winter weather conditions, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDoT) is temporarily reducing the speed limit on Interstate 86 and Interstate 90 in the northwest region.

PennDoT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

  • Interstate 86 from beginning of I-86 to the New York state line
  • Interstate 90 from the Ohio state line to the New York state line

On roadways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane. Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily restricting certain vehicles on Interstates 86, and 90 in the northwest region.

Vehicle restrictions will reflect Tier 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan (PDF) and will be in effect on the following roadways:

  • I-86 from the start of I-86 to the New York state line.
  • I-90 from the Ohio state line to the New York state line.

Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:

  • Tractors without trailers;
    • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers;
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers;
    • Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV;
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers;
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes;
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches; and motorcycles
